Citizens Blast Meadowlands Plan

At a public meeting last week on the Special Area Management Plan (SAMP) for New Jersey's Hackensack Meadowlands, area residents opposed the SAMP's proposed wetlands losses and land use plans that have strong potential to create traffic nightmares in the area.

The SAMP proposes filling 465 acres of Meadowlands wetlands for a 2.1 million square-foot megamall, a number of warehouses, truck parking facilities, office buildings, and residences.

Included in this plan is 51 acres of wetlands fill for transportation-related development - many of which would be used to build roads accessing the mall. This led residents to express concern about traffic congestion the sprawling new development will create. The mall alone is expected to generate 14,000 to 20,000 more cars per day onto already traffic-choked roads.

Written comments on the plan can be sent to Robert Hargrove, US EPA, 290 Broadway- 25th Floor, New York, New York 10007.
