NYC: Taking Traffic Calming To Next Level?

The NY State DOT might be ignoring community concerns in its implementation of the "Downtown Brooklyn Area-Wide Traffic Calming Project," according to Transportation Alternatives magazine.

It was thought that the project represented a watershed in how citizens can affect traffic problems because much of the project was designed by community representatives - making it less likely that community-favored solutions would be ignored by DOT.

But according to T.A., early signs are that DOT is focusing on spot pedestrian improvements rather than reducing through-traffic. But the main goal of the neighborhood groups backing the study is to reduce overall car volumes on area streets.
