Environmental groups urged the US EPA Tuesday to broaden and speed up implementation of pollution reduction requirements for diesel trucks. They want the EPA to require engine makers to meet lower nitrogen oxide emission standards and particulate matter emission standards by 2002. EPA is believed to be planning a target date of 2007 for the requirements. That would be too late, according to State and Territorial Air Pollution Program Administrators and the Assoc. of Local Air Pollution Control officials, who called for the sulfur content of all fuels to be lowered by 2004.
