Governor, DOT To Jump-Start L.I. Traffic Calming

Governor George Pataki and the New York State Transportation Commissioner Joseph Boardman announced today that the State Department of Transportation would create a $3 million fund that Long Island municipalities can apply to for pedestrian safety projects.

DOT said the new "Local Safe Streets and Traffic Calming Demonstration Program" would be paid for with federal Hazard Elimination funds.

The Tri-State Transportation Campaign suggested the concept to the DOT late last year, and hailed Commissioner Boardman's action on the issue today. This spring, Long Island media increasingly spotlighted dangerous conditions for pedestrians (see MTR #'s 224, 220). DOT anticipates soliciting proposals from cities and towns during 2000.
