Slow Speed Bill In Albany Limbo
The New York State Assembly did not vote this week on a bill
that would allow New York City to set speed limits below the state minimum
limit of 25 miles per hour. The legislation has passed in the State Senate
and has received favorable comment from Governor Pataki's staff. Winning
attention from the Assembly seems the measure's last hurdle. Assembly staff
members say that Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver supports the bill as well,
but it needs to be brought to a vote before the Assembly goes home for
the summer.
Transportation Alternatives is asking advocates of traffic calming and
sane streets to contact Speaker Silver in support of A.3969a / NYC Traffic
Calming. Fax 518-455-5459 or call 518-455-4100 (we reported an erroneous
bill number for the traffic calming legislation last week - that given
here is correct). Transportation Alternatives, 212-629-8080.
