LIRR Operating Woes Continue

According to the Long Island Rail Road's most recent monthly report, the number of late LIRR trains caused by equipment failure jumped 38% from January through May compared to the same period last year. LIRR riders suffered through a summer of woe last year, when service plummeted to its lowest level in more than a decade.

Larry Silverman, head of the LIRR Riders' Council, told the NY Post, "There's been a significant decline in the ability to maintain the fleet. The result is late and crowded trains - which, unfortunately, is a continuation of last year's pattern of failure."

Railroad officials say the problems will be corrected when its new engines and cars are on the rails, but putting them into operation has been delayed.
