Governor Whitman Slams Brakes on Trucks

On Tuesday, Governor Whitman stopped many big trucks from plying local NJ highways. Using an emergency order effective today, she banned interstate truck traffic on secondary highways like Routes 31, 206, 29, 518, 1, and 130. Trucks making in-state trips are not subject to the ban. DOT said the emergency rule would give it time to review and permanently revise NJ's truck policies.

Whitman's order comes after years of complaints from local officials about 18-wheelers on local roads. The completion of I-287, which finished a beltway around NYC, tugged trucks off the NJ Turnpike and onto many small non-tolled highways. With NJ DOT in the process of reviewing statewide truck regulations, calls for local truck restrictions have grown louder in recent weeks (MTR #228), but there has been question about whether such a ban would violate the commerce clause of the U.S. Constitution. Although Whitman said U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater granted NJ authority for the ban, the American Trucking Assoc. told newspapers that NJ should prepare for a court fight.
