Around the Region: NYers Like Cheap PATH

Although Mayor Giuliani has often criticized the subsidies that the PATH train riders receive from the Port Authority, a Quinnipiac College poll released last week that questioned New York City residents found that 74% supported keeping fares at $1 or lowering them.

A better way to decrease the Port Authority's contribution to PATH service, than raising the fare, was suggested by the Daily News editorial board. They reported that the FTA regulates PATH service as though it were a long-distance railroad which adds costs to its operation. For instance, long-haul train standards add 10% to the price-tag of new PATH cars. Numerous regulations cause added work for maintenance crews who must inspect the trains' breaking systems after each run between Newark and the World Trade Center or lawyers who must get waivers to these rules.
