Tough Topic: Long Island Transportation

News 12, Long Island's all-news station, and Newsday co-produced an hour-long program last Thursday on Long Island's transportation future. The show brought critical issues and debates to the forefront, including the efficacy of highway widening and HOV lanes, Long Island's extreme dependence on trucks and the public's desire for more and better public transit. Comments by citizen participants and callers were among the program's highlights.

However, the program spent much of its time on issues that are not on the table in any practical terms, including charging for access to the L.I. Expressway HOV lane and building a highway bridge from the North Shore to CT. That left out important conversations about future land use, using train stations as development hubs and transit innovations like rail station shuttle services and "bus rapid transit" techniques. Practical matters like stopping the brutal bus cuts pending in Nassau County and the steps L.I. needs to take (and encourage in NYC) to boost rail freight market share also received short shrift. On the bright side, the show left ample room for follow-up.

State Assemblyman Robert Sweeney and representatives from the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, NY State DOT, the NY Motorists Association, Action L.I., Newsday and the L.I. Regional Planning Board participated in the panel discussion.
