Highway Construction 2000

All of the "alternative" scenarios under consideration by NYSDOT's Long Island Transportation Plan 2000 study involve significant highway expansion projects. "Mass transit" options involve "HOV" lanes that would permit two-person carpools. Specific highways mentioned as widening candidates in a recent study update include the Northern and Southern State Parkways, and DOT appears to have other routes in mind as well.

While NY State DOT has relaxed its drive to expand highways elsewhere downstate, its Long Island operation seems hell-bent on deepening car dependence and accelerating sprawl with old-school paving strategies. DOT's regional office in Hauppauge is currently seeking to widen three state highways in Brookhaven, NY Routes 347, 112 and 25, but is stonewalling public interest groups seeking information about them.
