City transportation departments in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago and Denver have held national searches to fill bike program director positions. Today, their bicycle transportation programs are recognized among the most robust in the U.S.
NYC DOT has made a start towards a real bike network, installing a few new bike lanes in recent years. Now it needs to take the next step and become a national leader in the field, and take more advantage of public support and federal funding. Advocates and the cycling public hope the agency turns the tide, and hires someone who can make the city an innovator, rather than an onlooker, in bicycle transportation
