Greenways Grow Along the Hudson

Earlier this month twelve New Jersey mayors, Hudson County Executive Robert Janiszewski, and Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Shinn announced their commitment to completing the Hudson River Walkway. The Walkway is planned to follow almost nineteen miles of riverfront from the Bayonne Bridge to the George Washington Bridge. The path will link Liberty State Park with the Palisades Park, providing a public greenway between Bayonne, Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, West New York, Guttenberg, North Bergen, Edgewater, and Fort Lee. The county, state, and municipal leaders plan to conduct a survey of the roughly 8 miles of property still needed to complete the path and are actively searching for future sources of funding for construction and maintenance.

On the Hudson's east side, a walkway from Battery Park to the George Washington Bridge will edge closer to completion when 8 acres of waterfront property between 68th and 72nd Streets in Manhattan open to the public next month. Developer Donald Trump will deed to the City a portion of the former Penn Central railyard , now transformed into a public park, reported the Daily News (Sept. 12th). Trump will pay for maintenance costs under an agreement that allowed him to develop adjoining property.

According to the Daily News, the state DOT is building a temporary path for walkers and cyclists along the rest of the old railyard and four blocks of City property between 55th and 68th Streets. Added to the new park acquisition, the path will close the gap between Riverside Park and the public walkway that already exists between Battery Park and 55th Street.
