Long Island Traffic Calming Grant Program Gets Rolling

NY State DOT's Long Island office has released its instructions for municipal applications for the new "Local Safe Streets and Traffic Calming" program. The program will provide grants for L.I. counties, towns and villages to implement pedestrian and bicyclist safety and traffic calming projects.

Completed applications are due to NYSDOT on Jan. 12, 2001 at 4:00pm.

DOT officials will hold an informational meeting on applying for the funds Nov. 9 at 10:30am at the Dennison Building, Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge. Call 631-952-6128 to reserve a place.

The Tri-State Transportation Campaign strongly urges Long Island municipalities to participate in the program. We also urge concerned civic groups to check with local governments to see that pedestrian safety proposals for the program are under development.
