Road-for-Park Rally in the Bronx

On Sunday, the Southern Bronx River Watershed Alliance held a rally demanding that Bronx Borough President, Fernando Ferrer allow the NYC Department of Transportation to turn over an abandoned section of Edgewater Road to the city Parks Dept. The road abuts land fronting the Bronx River already designated for a waterfront park. A plan to resurrect the road as a temporary truck route into Hunts Point Market would severely limit pedestrian access. Both agencies have expressed a willingness to make the swap. However, "demapping" a city street requires sign-off by the Borough President.

In July, Ferrer stated that he did not support the temporary truck route plan (MTR #291). However, since then, he has failed to articulate a vision for the site. The organizers sent Ferrer over 700 petition signatures and offered to make him the guest of honor at the rally if he or a staff member chose to attend. Approximately 100 people participated in the rally.

This derelict portion of Edgewater Road would block pedestrian access to this new piece of Bronx River parkland if turned into a temporary truck route.
