| Municipalities across Long Island submitted
applications for the Local Safe Streets and Traffic Calming Grant Program
on
January 12, 2001. The new program allowing LI municipalities to apply for
funds from the NYS DOT for pedestrian and cyclist safety projects was initiated
by Governor Pataki in 1999. Nassau and Suffolk Counties have the highest
pedestrian death rates in NY outside of New York City (MTR
#225).
A total of 17 applications were submitted to DOT's Region 10 office. Seven of the applications came from Nassau, mostly from the north west villages. Submissions came from Glen Cove, Massapequa, Roslyn Harbor, Great Neck, Great Neck Plaza, Russell Gardens, and Town of North Hempstead. Ten applications were submitted from Suffolk County, one by the County itself. The rest arrived from the Town of Smithtown, Lindenhurst, Lake Grove, and Islip. The Town of Huntington submitted three application and the Town of Brookhaven submitted two. Project ideas range from a single modern roundabout to neighborhood traffic calming projects incorporating a variety of techniques. Decisions on project funding are expected to be released in mid-March. $2.7 million is available from the state for this round of projects. Strong municipal interest and high quality project submissions will make a strong case for expanding the program in future years. |
