Bronx Highway Study Back from the Dead?

Over the past four years, NY State DOT has convened intermittent meetings for its "Bronx Arterial Needs Major Investment Study." For those who can't remember back to the last meeting - in January of 2000 - the study is investigating traffic improvements in the Cross Bronx and Major Deegan Expressway corridors.

Citizens, community organizations, advocacy groups and elected officials have participated in the past. They developed a diverse set of options for the corridors, most of which seem to have made it past DOT's initial screening process.

The most alarming suggestion left on the table is the creation of a double-decker Cross Bronx Expressway. Several options suggest adding some type of lane to Major Deegan and Cross Bronx - often at street level. However, there are also many transit, roadway pricing and rail-freight options left in the study. And the suggestion to create open space by decking the open-cut sections of the highways made it past the first cut.

The next meeting for the study is February 8. See calendar at right.
