Bergen Arches Update & Corrections
Our report in MTR
#305 on NJ Transit's likely acquisition of the Bergen Arches right
of way contained several mistakes. Abandonment of the Bergen Arches is
not before the Surface Transportation Board. Bergen Arches is already abandoned.
Conrail is abandoning part of the River Line so the next phase of the Hudson-Bergen
light rail project can proceed. Under an old agreement, that abandonment
triggers NJ Transit's option to acquire Bergen Arches.
CSX and Norfolk Southern do control the Conrail "shared assets" area
operator.
NJ Transit's board voted last week to acquire the Bergen Arches.
