Will Reservoir Concerns Water Down Another NY Road Plan ?

One of the few highway widening projects still moving through NY State DOT's project pipeline downstate is under scrutiny by citizens, environmental groups, federal environmental officials and the NY Attorney General's Office. NY State DOT is working on a plan to expand a three-mile segment of Route 22 in the Town of Southeast, in Putnam County, from two to four lanes.

The project would run past two reservoirs that supply drinking water to Westchester and Putnam Counties. The environmental concerns over moving the highway closer to the reservoirs are similar to those that last year derailed expansion of another segment of Route 22 along the Kensico Reservoir in Westchester County. Residents also seem interested in trying to manage heavy traffic flows, rather than simply accommodating them, according to a recent Journal-News article.

A hearing on a draft of the project's environmental impact statement was held in December. State DOT spokespersons said the Dept. is open to input from any interested party.
