Meeting the Monorail

The connection of the Newark Airport monorail to the Northeast Corridor rail line - with service scheduled to start this September - will provide the first ever rail transit access to airport terminals in the metropolitan region. The monorail has served inter-terminal trips within the airport since 1996 - its extension to a new Northeast Corridor station between the Newark and North Elizabeth stops has been in the works since then.

NJ Transit and Amtrak are still working on details of the service they plan to offer to the airport station. NJ Transit says that initially, it is likely to have two north-bound and two south-bound trains an hour serve the airport. Airport service from Penn Station NY would thus be every half-hour. That's less frequent than airport bus service from the Port Authority terminal, but should provide a faster, more reliable trip. More trains could serve the airport once the Secaucus Transfer station opens in 2002.

Amtrak says it plans to schedule airport stops pending conclusion of talks with NJ Transit and the Port Authority. Thus, schedule decisions are still pending, though an Amtrak spokesperson told the Campaign that the railroad was well aware of potential airport service markets, like international travelers, beyond the NY/North Jersey markets. He cited the railroad's experience serving Baltimore/Washington International Airport, also along the Northeast Corridor.

The airport station will have passenger and baggage check-in facilities in a concourse above the NJ Transit/Amtrak tracks. Limited access roadways paralleling the monorail route will be used to move luggage checked at the rail station to terminals and planes.
