Issue 343 November 19, 2001
New York Governor George Pataki has until November 21st to decide whether to sign or veto it a bill that would permit right-turns on red lights in Staten Island. SI Borough President-elect James Molinaro, Mayor-elect Michael Bloomberg, Mayor Giuliani and the NYC Department of Transportation have all publicly opposed the bill, citing safety concerns (MTR #330). Currently, the ban on right-turn-on-red extends to all five boroughs, though NYC DOT can lift the ban for certain intersections. With 31% of all signals allowing right-on-red, Staten Island has more intersections without the restriction than the other four boroughs combined. |
