After two years of asking the Hudson River Park Trust and NYS Dept. of Transportation to take down dangerous, illegal stop signs directed at cyclists and skaters along Manhattan’s Hudson River Greenway path, Transportation Alternatives filed suit against the NY State DOT on April 20th. The stop signs, which are placed at head height in the middle of the path, are dangerous and frequently contradict traffic signals on streets and driveways that cross it. They also obstruct the path’s line of sight. Transportation Alternatives and Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields have advocated for removal of the signs. In general, signage for the Route 9a greenway, and on the greenway segment under the FDR Drive in lower Manhattan, seems overwrought. Agencies need to relax and develop more pragmatic approaches to such projects The lawsuit calls for State DOT to remove the signs for violating the State Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. |
