Nassau Propels Transit Plan

Nassau County’s Nassau Hub major investment study is well underway. If some of the options it is considering translate into action, the undertaking could prove to be one of the more interesting and ambitious “smart growth” or “new urbanist” ventures underway in the region.

NJ Commission Without a Message

Governor McGreevey’s Blue Ribbon Transportation Commission will hold hearings on October 20 and 22 in Newark and New Brunswick, respectively. The governor established the commission early in the year to identify major infrastructure needs and recommend ways to pay for them.

Light Rail Grows in NJ

Ridership on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line, which now operates between Bayonne and Hoboken, has been steadily rising since it opened in 2000, according to NJ Transit. Ridership increased markedly after the major disruption to the PATH system beginning on Sept. 11, 2001 and when the line was extended from its initial northern terminus in Jersey City to Hoboken.

One, Two, Many Toll Studies

A new report by the NYC Independent Budget Office adds to the growing body of analysis that finds East River bridge tolls would bust bridge congestion and yield significant revenue gains to depleted city coffers and the cash-strapped MTA.

New Mayoral Goal: Verrazano Bikeway

Mayor Bloomberg said last week he would urge the MTA to consider developing a bike and pedestrian way on the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. The mayor is virtually campaigning in NYC’s boroughs these days, and such a facility would be very popular on Staten Island and in southern Brooklyn.

Each week, the Tri-State Transportation Campaign publishes Mobilizing the Region, or MTRMTR is a bulletin on New Jersey, New York and Connecticut transportation news and opinion from the perspective of advocacy for sustainable transportation.
