Jeffrey Zupan, senior fellow for transportation at the Regional Plan Association and a board member of the Tri-State Campaign, has compiled a broad set of U.S.-wide statistics on mass transit usage trends and benefits. A member of the transit industry recently described it as "all the facts you need to cite every week but never have at your fingertips." The information is arranged as a PowerPoint slideshow and is available in CD-ROM format from the American Public Transit Association (APTA), which sponsored the project. "Transit Reborn" sets its context with national statistics and trends on increasing highway congestion, the relentless growth in vehicle miles of travel and its relationship to sprawling land development. It primarily covers mass transit growth trends, including the proliferation of passenger rail systems, dedicated bus lanes, electronic fare payment systems in U.S. cities. It documents increasing proposals for new transit lines, interest in bus rapid transit and the spread of cleaner fuel buses. The presentation notes that percentage growth in transit ridership has been faster than the increase in driving since the mid-1990s.
