2nd Avenue Stubway?

Last week, Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields expressed disappointment with the MTA for not including already-tunneled segments north of 99th Street in its initial Second Avenue subway plan. The MTA recently announced that construction for the first "minimum operating segment" of the Second Avenue subway is for the 96th Street to 63rd Street stretch.

Fields questioned why the existing tunnels that have lain dormant for years have not been utilized.

MTA officials say getting a portion of the line up and running as soon as possible will advantage the project in national competition for Federal Transit Administration construction aid.

Tunnels from 99th Street to 105th Street and from 110th Street to 120th Street were completed in the 1970’s and effectively make up half of the distance necessary to complete a subway tunnel up to 125th street. Fields said including these segments in the initial construction would be a cost-effective way to extend subway service to 125th Street and add riders to the line. v
