On April 22, New York State and City officials announced that reactivation of rail service to the Howland Hook container port on Staten Island will be completed by September 2005. The rail connection will allow freight to be moved by rail from Howland Hook to New Jersey rail lines and points across the country. The new service will reduce truck traffic on the Goethals Bridge. To fund the project, the Port Authority is putting up $32 million toward the reconstruction of the Staten Island Arlington Yard rail terminal and for various repairs along the tracks between Arlington and the Arthur Kill lift bridge, which the NYC Economic Development Corporation renovated several years ago. The EDC is also spending an additional $14 million on the projects. The Port Authority is in the midst of a major expansion of the Howland Hook port, and hope it will ultimately handle 20% of NY/NJ container traffic. The announcement was hailed by Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro, who estimated as much as 20 percent of the materials shipped to Howland Hook could utilize the rail link and said it would be an environmental and transportation boon for Staten Island.v
