Truck Relief for NYC Nabes?

Little has been heard lately out of the NYC DOT’s study of reorganizing the city’s truck route system to reduce community impacts. After many years of waiting, the study got underway last year. It will seek to keep more trucks on the legal routes, and change routes that may no longer make sense. Consultants say the study may not make any new public presentations until the fall.

State government increased penalties last year for truckers who run off of the city routes, but it is still too early to tell whether that is having an impact.

Advocacy groups were concerned when NYC DOT officials said it was unlikely the truck route study would recommend moving more trucks onto limited access highways and off of routes using local avenues. They have written to Commissioner Weinshall to ask her to explicitly address this issue, in a follow-up study if necessary, but have not received a reply. v
