Route 92 Won't Stop Gridlock

The Turnpike Authority’s proposed Route 92 would not reduce congestion on local roads in Middlesex County, according to the project’s just-released environmental impact statement. The report found significant delays would continue at local intersections, even if the proposed highway is built.

The Tri-State Campaign reviewed the agency’s DEIS and summarized the congestion projections for area intersections. "Route 92’s proponents claim it will relieve congestion, but it won’t. Most intersections will continue to operate at level of service "F" during morning and evening rush hours," said Janine Bauer, the group’s general counsel. "Some – like Scudders Mill Road at Schalk’s Crossing in Plainsboro – will become virtual parking lots."

In highway parlance, delay at intersections is graded – A, B, C, D, E or F – based on average wait times for drivers. An "A" indicates a delay up to five seconds per vehicle, while an "F" means a delay of more than a minute. According to the report, an "F" intersection is filled to capacity, with drivers severely limited in their ability to advance through the intersection.

Out of fourteen local intersections studied, 11 would be failing during the morning rush hour in 2028, if Route 92 is built, and ten would fail during the evening rush. The intersection of NJ-27 and Raymond Road would worsen from a "B" grade to an "E" grade during the evening rush.v
