New Jersey agencies have begun to advocate for traffic mitigation policies on and around the Meadowlands site for Xanadu, the proposed 104-acre entertainment and retail center.
Truckers driving illegally on north Brooklyn residential streets were caught by surprise last month by Assemblyman Vito Lopez and community activists.
New York State transportation officials say they do not want to underwrite development of a NASCAR track on Staten Island by promising to pay for highway and other work that would have to accompany the project. Such a facility would undoubtedly become a massive traffic generator in the gridlock-plagued borough.
Bloomberg Veto Threat Cause for Alarm
Mayor Bloomberg has said he is going to veto a bill almost unanimously approved in July by the NYC City Council that would ban the sale and installation of car alarms in the five boroughs. It is unclear if the Council will act to override a Mayoral veto.
Bronx Station Fixes on the Table
The race to include projects in the MTA’s 2005-2009 capital plan continues.
After experiencing a fare hike in 2003 (MTR #400), Westchester bus riders will be spared another increase in 2005, Westchester DOT Commissioner Larry Salley told the Journal News recently. But due to decreased state funding and increased agency costs, the bus system will not see the hoped-for implementation of free MetroCard transfers to Bronx subways this year (MTR #461).
Transport on Connecticut Table
The state Transportation Strategy Board may poll CT residents on new transportation funding sources early next year. According to the Courant, possibilities for new funding include tolls or a gas or sales tax increase.
