Speedway Could Stall Traffic

New York State transportation officials say they do not want to underwrite development of a NASCAR track on Staten Island by promising to pay for highway and other work that would have to accompany the project. Such a facility would undoubtedly become a massive traffic generator in the gridlock-plagued borough.

"We’re not going to be in the position that we're going to subsidize this endeavor," a state DOT spokesperson told the Staten Island Advance recently. "If it’s not something that we already planned on doing, we’re going to have to see some sort of investment on their part, in terms of dollars."
