Transportation work nominated for federal streamlining in the Tri-State region is a mixed bag of road, transit and freight projects. Many projects face more daunting hurdles than winning environmental permits, which makes us dubious about the substance of "priority" designations. Connecticut US Route 6 - Replacement of an 11.5-mile section of two-lane arterial highway with a 4-lane freeway design. In addition, full service interchanges would be constructed at western and eastern ends. Container Barge Operation - A facility for shipping containers by barge between Bridgeport and the New York/New Jersey port. New Jersey Portway Phase I Feasibility Assessment A series of freight projects to speed trucks between the Newark-Elizabeth seaport, Newark airport, rail yards, trucking and warehousing/transfer centers and highways. Access to the Region's Core - New NJ Transit tracks and tunnels between Secaucus and Manhattan. Funding will be the project’s biggest obstacle. New York Haverstraw/Yonkers Ferry Service to NYC - High-speed ferry service on The Hudson River. West Shore Region Rail Extension Study - Examination of the potential for passenger rail service in Bergen County, NJ and Rockland County, NY. CSX, which owns the track opposes the project, and New Jersey is lukewarm at best.
