Transit-Oriented Development
Robert Cervero's The Transit Metropolis (1998, Island Press) contains detailed descriptions of the BRT systems in Adelaide, Austrailia; Curitiba, Brazil; and Ottawa, Canada, as well as the impacts each system has had on the surrounding urban form.
Implementation and Planning
ITDP Bus Rapid Transit Planning Guide - An extensively detailed 850-page guide which reviews best practice planning, design, and business elements of BRT systems worldwide. Done by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy.
The Mission Group - A San Diego-based planning firm that specializes in bus rapid transit planning and BRT-oriented development, focusing on suburban and medium-sized city implementations. Presentations on the Mission Group's website focus on how BRT system planners can take advantage of the mode's flexibility and avoid planning systems that are just "light rail lite."
TCRP Report 118 - Bus Rapid Transit Practioner's Guide - This July 2007 guide explores the costs, impacts, and effectiveness of implementing selected bus rapid transit (BRT) components. It also examines the planning and decision making related to implementing different components of BRT systems.
Style - BRT Ridership Analysis (PDF) - A WestStart-Calstart report done for the Federal Transit Administration which finds significant ridership benefits linked to the use of attractively styled, comfortable bus rapid transit vehicles (as opposed to traditional "shoebox" buses).
Projects in the Tri-State Region
Hartford-New Britain Busway - This Connecticut DOT project consists of a dedicated busway between downtown Hartford and downtown New Britain. It is now in the final design stage; construction is expected to begin by 2009.
New York City Select Bus Service - The MTA and NYC Dept. of Transportation are collaborating to develop bus rapid transit routes city-wide. The first route, the Bx12 Select in the Bronx, opened in 2008 and service is expected to expand throughout the city.
Tappan Zee Bridge/I-287 Corridor - NYSDOT plans to replace or rehabilitate the 50-year-old Tapan Zee Bridge, and build a bus rapid transit line in the I-287 corridor between Suffern and Port Chester, along with a commuter rail line between Suffern and Manhattan.
Westchester Central Avenue BRT Study - The Central Ave. Corridor is one of Westchester County's most heavily traveled thoroughfares, connecting White Plains and the Bronx. The county DOT is studying replacing an existing limited-stop bus route with a BRT route.
