The solution to the biggest cause of dwell time -- the farebox bottleneck -- is off-vehicle fare payment (also called pre-boarding fare payment). Rather than paying onboard the bus, riders pay at the bus station. When a bus arrives, passengers can simply step on, often at multiple doors.
