Successful TOD Programs
Some TOD programs at the state and local level have seen great success. Some of the better programs are linked to below.
New Jersey Transit Village Program — A key aspect of the New Jersey Future in Transportation program is NJDOT’s and NJ Transit’s Transit Village Initiative. The Transit Village program seeks to redevelop and revitalize communities around transit facilities to make them an appealing place to live, work and recreate.
Maryland Department of Transportation—Office of Real Estate — The State of Maryland has seen great success in promoting TOD efforts, partnering with local governments and the private sector to bolster development around its robust transit system.
Portland, Oregon Metro-Region — Metro's TOD program has contributed to many of the regions' successful transit-oriented developments and has acquired key opportunity sites at transit stations. Through active engagement in the design and construction of real projects, the program has helped identify and remove obstacles to the creation of transit villages, main streets and mixed-used urban centers.
Austin, Texas — Austin has made a commitment to promoting development around existing transit and future transit lines. The City's mission with respect to TOD is to create transit-supportive communities by optimizing the use of land around high quality transit and help Austin achieve some of its social, environmental and economic goals.
HomeConnecticut – The HomeConnecticut campaign can be used as a tool for those municipalities promoting TOD in Connecticut. HomeConnecticut is legislation passed by the Connecticut General Assembly during the 2007 legislative session. While the legislation itself does not promote TOD, the program provides grants to municipalities interested in creating attractive affordable housing of increased density within existing infrastructure like brownfields, and along main streets and downtowns. This legislation can help municipalities to develop dense enough town centers that will further support existing transit ridership or promote new transit options. This program is attractive to municipalities because it fosters affordable housing and economic development based on responsible planning and local control.
